Crone is the lead architect undertaking the complex $200m redevelopment of the David Jones flagship store in Elizabeth Street, Sydney

The complex and delicate refurbishment of the heritage store, built for purpose in 1928, will expand the size of the store from eight to twelve operating retail floors, converting four existing non-retail floors into functioning retail space.

Working closely with David Jones’ design and development teams, we are delivering a beautiful, modern retail experience that complies with today’s regulatory standards, whilst preserving and celebrating the iconic features of the heritage site. Achieving this delicate balance is the result of effective collaboration with a highly skilled project team including Benoy Singapore, Weir Phillips, RCP and Mainbrace.

Stage 1 of redevelopment was completed in November 2018 and is now open and operating. This stage includes the refurbishment of retail floors five to nine with extensive services upgrades serving future levels. Some of the major project works includes the installation of new double-height escalators connecting levels seven to nine, L07 women’s shoe world, bridal suite and L09 kids.

In Stage 2, completion and opening of L02, L03, and L04  occupies 9,000 sqm and features womenswear and apparel, a cafe and personal shopping suite.

Floor-by-floor renovations allow normal trading throughout construction, with final stages of the project due for completion in 2020 .

Since 1999 Crone has been working with David Jones, an iconic Australian retail institution, through various stages of refurbishment and upgrade works to both their Elizabeth and Market Street stores.
